Equality Florida responds to Miami-Dade Commission Voting Down Ban On Conversion Therapy
Today, the Miami-Dade County Commission voted 4-7 against an ordinance that would ban so-called "conversion therapy." Equality Florida’s Senior Policy Director, Hannah Willard, provided the following statement:
"What we heard from the Commission today is that, in the face of an extreme campaign of outrageous lies and misinformation, they needed more time to fully understand this issue. We are confident that, given the facts, the Commission will come to fully understand the devastating and sometimes lethal impact of conversion therapy. We are also committed to continuing the public education that has led to 14 municipalities passing similar ordinances across the state. We look forward to the moment when Miami-Dade County supports this policy and joins us in protecting LGBTQ youth from grave danger.
I am so grateful to the countless advocates that came out to support the ban on conversion therapy today and our partner organizations that championed this effort, including SAVE, the Southern Policy Law Center, Safe Schools South Florida, Pridelines, The Alliance for GLBTQ Youth, PFLAG South Miami, The YES Institute, Lotus House, and Jewish Community Services South Florida. A huge thank you to Commissioners Heyman, Edmonson, Levine Cava, Jordan, and Barreiro for their support."
