Carmichael Training Rolls Into Brevard

Coaches Steve Brandes (left) and Thad Walker review
cycling route maps with Facility Manager Colin Izzard
Last month Carmichael Training Systems, a nationwide athlete
coaching and training company for cycling and endurance running,
moved one of its three training centers to Brevard. The company
will be occupying the lower level of the Hollingsworth building at 147
East Main Street.
Colin Izzard, a long-time sports enthusiast, was a college swimmer and regional pro bike racer in the New York area who moved to WNC in 2000. He was a swimming coach at UNC Chapel Hill and head coach for the Asheville swim team. He joined CTS in 2002 and managed the training center at its prior location in Asheville.
“We are delighted to be in Transylvania County,” Izzard says, “and we see great business opportunities in the outdoor recreation arena. We will be bringing large numbers of individuals and groups here for training and to enjoy our forests, trails and natural resources. The economic impact on the community will be significant.”

$15,000 Cash Purse
Pisgah has earned a growing reputation for having some of the best trails in the country, and this five-day, fully supported endurance event delivers an unmatched sampler platter of the best singletrack in the country. The course includes some of the East’s most rugged trails and tallies 28,000 feet of climbing over 195 miles. Come sample fall riding in Pisgah National Forest with rhododendron tunnels, picturesque creek crossings, incredible leaf colors, and rooty, rocky singletrack.
This year we are offering a Team Relay category for the first time. This will allow teams of 2-5 riders to each sample a stage or two as only one person will ride per day. All team members will receive a jersey, finisher's medal and dinner on the opening and final days.

Quote of the Month
“Thousands of tired, nerve-shaken, over-stressed people are beginning to find out that going to the mountains is going home; that wildness is a necessity; that mountain parks and reservations are useful not only as fountains of timber and irrigating rivers, but as fountains of life.”
John Muir – Conservationist, Naturalist, Explorer
