David's Electronics Stays The Course

David and Jane Zumstein

The 40 years that David and Jane Zumstein have operated a business in Brevard make up more than 25 percent of the total time span that Transylvania County will be honoring this year during its 150th anniversary celebration.

“In 1971 we opened David’s Electronics, a TV sales and repair shop, and became a Radio Shack franchisee three years later,” Jane recounts. “We started out on Jordan St., moved to East Main and finally to our present location on North Broad St. across from Brevard College.”

Jane points out that Rice Furniture, Highland Bookstore, Ragland Lighting and Grover’s Office Supply all started downtown about the same time. “We have seen many others come and go, and we’ve lived through many economic ups and downs, but fortunately we’re still here.”

The Radio Shack franchise has had to face intense competition from “big box” stores and the fast growth of Internet online sales, but the Zumsteins point out that focusing on superior customer service has continued to give them significant competitive advantages.
