What's New In Business
NEW BUSINESS PROGRAMS
SLATED FOR COUNTY
SCHOOLS
Three new programs on
personal financial
literacy,
entrepreneurship and
workforce readiness
developed by Junior
Achievement, Inc. will
be presented in
Transylvania County high
schools during the
current school year.
The sessions are
designed to help
students gain knowledge
and skills about
personal financial
matters, make wiser
financial decisions, be
better prepared to enter
the world of work, and
learn about
entrepreneurship. The
program features
interactive sessions led
by volunteers from the
County’s Senior Resource
Network, SCORE and local
business leaders and
will be integrated with
existing courses at
Brevard, Davidson River
and Rosman High Schools.
Funding for the first
year of the program will
be provided by United
Way of Transylvania
County.
According to Mark
Burrows, County Director
of Planning & Economic
Development, “Goals and
action steps to
strengthen the ties
between education and
the business community
are part of the County’s
overall economic
development strategic
plan. We are pleased to
be partnering with the
school administration,
business representatives
and United Way in
offering these courses.”
Bill Layton, Senior
Resource Network
coordinator, has led the
initiative and has
appointed SRN member Joe
Kolinsky as project
manager. Kolinsky is a
former high school
teacher, coach,
counselor and principal.
“It has been a real
pleasure working with
Jeff McDaris,
superintendent of
schools, and Scott
Elliott, director of
vocational and secondary
education, to launch
this program,” Layton
and Kolinsky said. “The
teachers who will be
involved in these
in-school courses are
just as enthusiastic as
we are.”
