Rice Furniture - A Model For Retail Success

Eddie, Jeff and Ricky Rice

As the oldest family-owned retail business in Transylvania County, Rice Furniture and Design Center has gone through plenty of economic ups and downs. But the real success story is much more than survival – it’s that the Company has enjoyed steady growth over the long haul.

“It all began back in the 1940s when my father went to work as a salesman for the Pearlman Furniture Company, which operated several retail stores in Western North Carolina,” according to Eddie Rice, Edwin’s oldest son. “One day my father asked me and my two brothers, Jeff and Ricky, what we would think if he and our mother bought the Brevard store. We were overjoyed and were ready to start work immediately!”

The three Rice brothers are now in charge of the business and managing its growth. “Things just sort of evolved,” Eddie explains. “First we added floor coverings, followed by cabinetry. For awhile we sold and installed wallpaper, but that didn’t work as well for us, so it was discontinued. more

Award-Winning Entrepreneurs Share Success Strategies

Jimmy Harris, Katina Hansen & John Taylor

Three local business owners and Transylvania County award-winners for their successful operations shared their advice with a small but enthusiastic audience at the Bring Your Own Business (BYOB) session on October 28 at the County Library.

  • John Taylor, O.P. Taylor’s Toy Shop and 2009 Entrepreneur of the Year, pointed out that cost control is important in an economic downturn, but it’s also a time to look for opportunities to expand a business.
  • Katina and John Hansen, Blue Ridge Bakery and Chairman’s Choice in 2009, have implemented an innovative new marketing program that is attracting both new customers and encouraging return visits by existing customers.
  • Jimmy Harris, owner of Harris Ace Hardware named Retailer of the Year, continues to get good results from focusing on the human side -- personal contact and improved customer service.  more

Quote of the Month

“The time has never been riper for small communities to prosper. But the prosperity doesn’t happen on its own. It happens through solid and visionary leadership, having a “Can Do” attitude and exhibiting a willingness to take risks. It happens through knowing what your town’s strengths and resources are and how to leverage those strengths and resources.”
